Durable hardwood has been a popular flooring choice for generations because it gives a home an attractive, upscale look. While the floor can be refinished when it begins to look worn, proper maintenance can lessen the need for this task. The floor can look new year after year with careful use and a good cleaning routine. Family-owned The Flooring Center Orlando offers products that can keep your floors looking new as well as expert advice. We have several showrooms in Orlando that are staffed by pros who are knowledgeable about hardwood flooring.

Preventive measures for your hardwood

To protect your floor, use a chair mat at a desk and floor protectors under furniture. Don’t forget to remove high heels or cleats at the door. To keep dirt and water from being tracked onto the floor, use a good quality indoor/outdoor mat. Look for a mat with:

  • an attractive surface that is made of fibers that dry quickly and won’t rot or fade.
  • heavy duty rubber backing that keeps the mat in place and water off the floor.
  • adequate space for walking a few steps inside the door, such as a 3-ft x 3-ft square mat.
Cleaning wood flooring

A good weekly cleaning routine will keep hardwood flooring looking its best. A microfiber mop works well for this chore since they are made to trap grime and dirt. Use hardwood dusting spray or polish only if recommended by the manufacturer. You can use a floor-brush attachment with your vacuum as well. Since grim, dirt, and oil are not completely removed with consistent cleaning, it is a good idea to deep clean the floor once or twice a year. Damp-mop the floor with a mop and floor cleaning product specifically for wood.
