Preventive measures for your hardwood
To protect your floor, use a chair mat at a desk and floor protectors under furniture. Don’t forget to remove high heels or cleats at the door. To keep dirt and water from being tracked onto the floor, use a good quality indoor/outdoor mat. Look for a mat with:
- an attractive surface that is made of fibers that dry quickly and won’t rot or fade.
- heavy duty rubber backing that keeps the mat in place and water off the floor.
- adequate space for walking a few steps inside the door, such as a 3-ft x 3-ft square mat.
A good weekly cleaning routine will keep hardwood flooring looking its best. A microfiber mop works well for this chore since they are made to trap grime and dirt. Use hardwood dusting spray or polish only if recommended by the manufacturer. You can use a floor-brush attachment with your vacuum as well. Since grim, dirt, and oil are not completely removed with consistent cleaning, it is a good idea to deep clean the floor once or twice a year. Damp-mop the floor with a mop and floor cleaning product specifically for wood.
