Three tips for understanding luxury vinyl flooring wear-layers

The wear layer is crucial to the durability of luxury vinyl flooring. The wear layer is a clear, strong, melamine coating that is placed just above the printed design sheet. It protects the floor from scratches, scuffs, and dents.

Tip #1: Thickness matters

With luxury vinyl flooring, wear layers are measured in mils: the more mils, the more protection.

For high traffic, busy areas in homes, a 20-mils thickness is recommended. For commercial applications, a 26-mils thickness is recommended.

If it’s a small, quiet family with the subfloor in good condition, you might be able to get away with less.

can’t be refinished like solid or engineered hardwood. No one wants a scratched-up wood (or wood-look) floor!

Buy the best your wallet will allow, though. A thicker layer is quieter, provides more design options, and hides subfloor imperfections better.

Tip #2: Wear layers give the product a unique look

Not only does it add sheen, but it's where the embossing takes place. Embossing creates textured looks like brushed, hand scraped and distressed, or embossed-in-register.

Wear layers help in waterproofing

Luxury vinyl flooring is entirely waterproof. It can be submerged or spilled on.

The wear layer will keep spills at the top so they don't absorb. That also makes cleaning more straightforward–they sit there waiting to be wiped.
